Are you over 30 and noticing a stubborn increase in belly fat, even if your diet and exercise habits haven’t drastically changed? You’re not alone, and understanding the hormonal landscape is key. For many women navigating postnatal, perimenopause and menopause, there can be a 2-3 times increase in visceral fat, and it’s unfortunately stored right around the belly.

Not all body fat and belly fat is the same ….

Belly fat if you are over 35 isn’t your typical subcutaneous fat (the kind stored just under the skin). The drop in estrogen we experience during this time drives the accumulation of VISERCAL fat, which has unique metabolic properties and doesn’t respond to simple calorie restriction (the way subcutaneous fat does). It’s also stored deep within, surrounding your organs.

This is why simply defaulting to a calorie deficit no longer works

As visceral fat is complex interplay of:

Nutritional Choices: The types of food we eat significantly impact inflammation and hormone balance.

Inflammation: Chronic inflammation can contribute to visceral fat storage.

Aging: Our natural aging process, drop in estrogen influences hormonal shifts.

High Cortisol: Daily life stress and excessive exercise and too little calories can elevate cortisol + inflammation promoting visceral fat storage.

Insulin Levels: Insulin resistance can also play a role, which can be contributed by a Diet High in Processed Foods, Sugar, and Unhealthy Fats: These types of foods can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar, forcing the pancreas to pump out more insulin. Over time, this constant demand can lead to insulin resistance, contributing to inflammation, a key driver of visceral fat.

Outdated wellness metrics that do not consider female physiology

It’s crucial to understand that you can even have a “normal BMI” and still harbor high levels of visceral fat, highlighting that it’s not just about overall weight. Subcutaneous fat is primarily driven by caloric excess, while visceral fat is more influenced by inflammation and hormones.

Unfortunately as many fitness and wellness programs (plus many health professionals advice) has been based on male biomechanics which gives very little consideration to these unique female physiology nuances. Dr Stacy Sims is a leading female health researcher and exercise physiologist who is pioneering why it is crucial that this changes, hence why she has coined the term #womenarenotsmallmen – because as females we need our own data and and training adaptations !

The Good News? You Can Reduce Visceral Fat!

While calorie restriction alone isn’t the answer, consistent and optimal nutritional changes, especially following the principles outlined in Dr. Mindy Pelz’s “Eat Like a Girl,” combined with strategic fasting (if not breastfeeding), can absolutely make a significant difference in reducing visceral fat. I coach many of my private perimenopause 1:1 clients in this method (and yes you can be peri and postnatal simultaneously)

However, it’s crucial for breastfeeding mothers to approach this with informed awareness. Breast milk is a vital source of nourishment for your baby, and its composition is significantly influenced by the mother’s diet and energy stores. Notably, breast milk is rich in approximately 40-60% fat, providing a crucial source of energy and essential fatty acids for the baby’s brain development and overall growth.

Studies show that fat is the most variable macronutrient in breast milk, and its concentration can even change during a single feeding but its important to note that your body will naturally store this fat (around your belly) as it’s essentially your baby’s lunch ! (so another myth busted – that breastfeeding makes you “lose weight”)

The Pitfalls of “Spot Reducing” Belly Fat: by defaulting to Kegels + Crunches

It’s also vital to ditch the instinct to default to excessive cardio, endless crunches, drawing “belly button to spine” and Kegels to try and “spot reduce” belly fat (plus avoid the dreaded “leaking”). This approach can often backfire by increasing cortisol and intra-abdominal pressure, potentially exacerbating that midline bulge. Plus, traditional core exercises primarily target the superficial “six-pack” muscles, neglecting the whole core – which is everything between your shoulders and hips, including that all-important pelvic floor.

The Male-Centric Fitness Myth:

Unfortunately, much of the traditional fitness advice out there was originally designed based on male biomechanics and doesn’t fully account for the ever-changing female hormones, physiology, and the unique challenges we face during pregnancy, postnatal recovery, perimenopause, and very often with pelvic floor concerns. And with the fitness industry being largely unregulated, many coaches simply are not certified in these crucial distinctions.

Recent research has found that most women are 40% protein deficient. Which makes sense especially if you have given birth to a little human that is predominantly made up of protein ! Protein is also essential for postpartum tissue healing, breast milk supply and for a healthy metabolism for the long runway of motherhood. One of the best ways to increase your protein intake is with a quality collagen or protein powder…but don’t be fooled – not all are created equal ! Here is why.

A nutrition question that is commonly asked is …“Can I eat fish during pregnancy ?”

Fish can be eaten during pregnancy and it IS packed with nutrients, however. if you are not a fish lover or struggling with pregnancy nausea please don’t worry as as nutrients in fish (mainly protein and beneficial fats) can also be found in other foods.

Fish safety tips during pregnancy

If you do decide to eat fish during pregnancy here are some general safety tips:

Avoid eating too much fish with high levels of mercury (shark, swordfish, mackerel and tuna).

Limit intake of fish such as orange roughy or catfish to 1 serve per week

Try as best you can to eat wild-caught fish rather than farmed fish.

Always ensure fish is cooked and served hot or steaming to avoid listeria

Omega 3 fats and Fish Oil are essential in your diet for your baby’s rapidly developing brain. Salmon is very high in the specific omega 3 fatty acid called DHA so is a an excellent choice fish to eat.

If you are not eating fish during pregnancy, be sure to eat a variety of protein for example red meat, poultry, beans, lentils, tofu, eggs, high quality / pregnancy safe protein powder and beneficial fats (e.g. nuts, seeds, whole butter, avocado, cold-pressed oils) from other sources.

The importance of DHA in Fish Oil

Fish Oil is also an excellent supplement (a minimum of 300mg of DHA per provides enough for you and also your baby’s development). As Lily Nichols author of Real Food For Pregnancy explains recent research showed women who were supplemented with 2.200 mg of DHA per day for the last 20 weeks of pregnancy had baby’s with significantly better hand eye co-ordination. Please speak to your medical provider or nutritionist about supplements prior to consuming.

To make shopping, mama life and preparing for your new addition easier here is a list for you of HEALTHY STORABLE FOODS that you can take to the grocery store, create a shopping list from or if you are nesting prior to you baby’s arrival why not stock up and re-organise your pantry !

In the list below you will find produce divided by storage FRIDGE, FREEZER OR PANTRY plus extra tips and typical shelf life.

PLUS some bonus ideas and an exclusive discount from Seed & Sprout to help “un-plastic” the world when you go shopping and store your items.

Click on any of the images and enter the code : MATESRATES at the Seed & Sprout checkout to get $10 off any order

Please also be aware below is a generic list so some items may not be available in some parts of the world due to seasonality.

I would also love to hear any of your suggestions – connect with me in my Facebook Community here

Fresh Produce

The suggested storage times are based on fresh produce purchased from a market or quality local fruit store (supermarket fruit and vegetables have a shorter shelf life)

Sweet potatoes & potatoes : 3- 5 weeks room temp (cooler climate) / 2-3 months fridge or cold space

Celery : 2-3 weeks fridge

Carrots : 4 weeks in re-usable mesh or silicone food pouches (see image)

Apples : 2-3 weeks in pantry / counter(cooler climate) 4 -5 weeks in fridge

Cabbage : Up to 1 – 2 mths (don’t was until you are ready to use)

Onions 4-6 week, 8 months in freezer. Tip : peel / slice and freeze in silicone food pouches

Oranges: 2 months in fridge, 2 -3 weeks on counter

Fridge

There are more options you can add to this fridge list but I have chosen items that last a long time and are high in protein as during pregnancy and after you require 40% more protein – here’s why

Eggs : 3-5 weeks in your fridge and 8 mths to a year frozen (shell and store in silicone pouches in freezer)

Greek yoghurt (low sugar) great source of protein 4-5 weeks

Cottage Cheese (high in protein) 4-5 weeks

Cheese slices or block of hard cheese 1-2 months

Laughing cow cheese 5-6 months

Freezer

Buy fresh
organic berries (low pesticide) and freeze them or buy frozen 8-10 months

Buy fresh
mango (slice up the flesh only) and freeze lasts 8 -10 mths

Frozen
vegetables (buy fresh and slice up store in air tight / silicone pouches)or by pre-frozen
last 8-10 months try carrot, broccoli, zucchini (I add this to smoothies),
spinach, kale, peas, stir fry veggies

Cheese – grate it
first then freeze, lasts 6 months

Bread,
tortilla wraps, bread rolls, sour dough freeze 4-5 months

Pantry

Most items at 2 – 5 months shelf life if stored in airtight containers (please read packaging to check). Many more options you can add but these are mine go-to’s on the healthier side

Nuts – dry
roasted almonds, raw cashews, brazil nuts etc

Jerky

Canned Tuna

Legumes

Pumpkin is high in antioxidants and restorative minerals (perfect for post birth healing) including potassium, magnesium, vitamins A, C + E. Pumpkin also helps support a healthy immune system and digestive system and it the perfect toddler and first baby food !

This recipe is also low FODMAP as it uses Japanese Pumpkin and makes it naturally a little sweeter than butternut. I love this bread recipe as its also gluten free, quick and easy and you can turn it into into the yummiest gluten-free pizza or vegetable muffins stuffed with spinach and caramelised onion.

Bake for approximately 1 1/2 hours – check after 1 hour and test as times may vary depending on your oven and temperature.

We all pretty much know that when your tummy is unhappy you are pretty unhappy as it can affect you in myriad of physical and emotional ways. To get the facts on gut health Nutritionist, Naturopath and Women’s Health Specialist Georgia Marrion provides some expert tips on navigating gut health in the video below

Get the Gut Health facts including …

Watch the video above and get the facts on gut health to help you navigate

The symptoms of poor gut health

What other non food factors affect gut health

How a healthy gut isn’t just about avoiding foods that trigger inflammation, but consuming foods that nourish it.

Some of the easiest, most accessible foods to help nourish the gut

How you should feel when your gut is working better

Protein for Immunity & Gut Health

A healthy immune system begins with a healthy body. It maintains homoeostasis by defending against viruses and bacteria, which can cause inflammation, illness and disease.

To have a strong immune system you need a daily supply of quality protein.
Research studies have shown that deficiency of high-quality protein can result in depletion of immune cells, inability to make antibodies, and other immune-related problems.
This is incredibly important to remember during pregnancy and postpartum.
Why ?
As protein is pretty much the building block of life.

Every cell in yours and your baby’s growing body requires protein. Just think about all the cells that are growing during pregnancy, or healing post birth, protein is a major nutrient so supplies to support this must be adequate.

Even marginally low protein intake may impair immune function. An increase of 34% protein is required when a bub is growing inside your or during breastfeeding and healing post birth !

Now eating an extra steak or a dozen daily eggs is often not ideal if you are tired and nauseous. So to meet the daily protein requirements I highly recommend a #nonasties pregnancy and breastfeeding safe protein supplement. And yes..one that I personally trusted was hard to come by !!! Read more here why.

Smoothies are a great
option when you are busy, nauseous or just too tired to consider chewing….but
still want to stay well nourished !!

This breakfast smoothie is one of my favourites as it only contains 3 ingredients. Plus, it’s high in protein, essential fats and amino acids to help you feel full and the addition of banana boosts potassium, which can help avoid the dreaded pregnancy cramps and makes it a wonderfully creamy shake.

What I love about making smoothies is that they make the perfect quick and easy meal that I can enjoy for a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner – plus they are portable, so are perfect if you’re on the run….or seated for long periods nursing a baby.

I love finding beautiful Aussie family-run businesses that create high-quality products to help support and heal pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding mamas.

MAMA BODY TEA is an Australian business founded by Jessica Spencer in 2012, when she became a mother and wanted to find a natural way to help with settling her baby’s upset tummy, and then to help boost her own milk supply. Jessica worked with Herbalist and Naturopath Anne Cousins to develop a range of beautiful herbal teas, especially for Mums. Jessica’s friend, Jess O’Brien later joined the business, and the two friends (the two Jess’) have worked tirelessly to create the fabulous brand that Mama Body Tea is today.
