I am not a huge coffee drinker however during pregnancy I craved iced coffee ! Especially when the heat hit Brisbane in January/February. During pregnancy your daily protein requirements increase by 15% . So I have created a healthy version of iced coffee that is protein boosted …plus can be made caffeine free if required.
This healthy protein boosted iced coffee is fantastic alternative to the iced coffee drinks you find in supermarkets and petrol stations that are jam packed with sugar. Plus as I found too much milk made me nauseous so you can also make this delicious iced coffee dairy free.
Is coffee safe during pregnancy ?
Yes ! You can still enjoy a cup of coffee or tea every now and then during your pregnancy. But most health experts recommend that you don’t have more than 200mg of caffeine in a day. That’s about one cup of espresso coffee, one mug of instant coffee or two cups of tea. In my iced coffee recipe below you can limit the amount of coffee to be very minimal e.g 1 teaspoon or just use decaf. Plus the use of protein powder helps to slow the caffeine release or surge into your blood stream…which helps me avoid the dreaded coffee jitters !
